- Low-dose alcohol enhances dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens via alpha6-containing nicotinic receptors on GABAergic inputs from the ventral tegmental area
- Dopamine neurons in the ventral tegmental area project to the nucleus accumbens. These projections underly the rewarding properties of ethanal and nicotine. Dopamine release is affected by α6-containing nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. We studied these nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and how they affect ethanol affects and neuronal plasticity.
