Poster Instructions
CONTENT RULES
Each poster will summarize your research project, and MUST also include the following elements:
- All names of student investigators
- All faculty mentor names
- Department name (e.g. "Psychology Department" or "School of Family Life")
- A title that matches the title entered on the online registration form
- A BYU logo somewhere on the poster. To download a high-quality version of the BYU monogram or primary logo lockup, go to https://brand.byu.edu/monogram. Note that this is different than the BYU seal used in the past.
Each submission must include a 30-second video of one of the investigators explaining the project. How well you demonstrate your knowledge of the topic and the research is part of the judging process. The video should be filmed in landscape orientation, saved in .mp4 format, and be smaller than 500 MB.
CREATE YOUR POSTER
To create a poster
- Choose a program to use. Most students create their posters in Microsoft PowerPoint. You can also use programs such as MS Publisher, Adobe Illustrator, or Adobe InDesign, or even Canva. There are many instructional videos on YouTube, such as the one below, that can help you create a poster. But the most important thing to know it that you must submit a poster in the correct dimensions and in a PDF format.
- Set your poster dimensions to 44" wide and 33" tall (landscape orientation). In PowerPoint, this can be done by going to Design --> Slide Size --> Page Setup. Enter 44" for the width and 33" for the height. Do not let PowerPoint "fix" the dimensions you enter if it asks to. All posters must be this size and orientation.
- Your font should be no smaller than 24 pt. Since the poster will be much larger than it is on your screen, your smallest words should be at least 24 pt font size. Headlines and subheads should be much larger. Also, avoid fonts that are hard to read or distracting from the actual content of your poster.
- Use images that are 300 dpi (dots-per-inch) or higher. When selecting images for your poster, remember they are going to be printed on a large poster. Both printing and size require high-resolution images to avoid pixelation. Ideally, the resolution of any images on your poster needs to be 300 dpi (dots-per-inch) or higher. Anything smaller than that will be blurry and distorted upon printing. Images found on the internet are generally 72 dpi and therefore insufficient. For free high-resolution image options, refer to this page: https://copyright.byu.edu/free-image-resources.
- Proofread your poster a few times. Also have a friend read through it. We will not accept resubmissions to fix errors. Once submitted, your poster will be printed.
- Send your poster to your professor or faculty advisor to review and incorporate their suggestions.
- Go to "File"
- click "Save as" or "Save as Adobe PDF"
- In the "File name" box, type the name of your poster.
- In the "Save as type" box, select "PDF"
- Click "Save"
- Open the PDF to ensure the file saved properly.Convert your poster into a PDF. Note: simply changing the file extension name of your poster to "PDF" does not convert the file to a PDF. Generally, this can be done in any program by choosing a "Save As" or "Export" option from the "File" menu
- Submit your poster on the conference site. You will need the following information and files:
- Poster title
- Poster abstract (approximately 50 words)
- Your phone number and email
- PDF of your poster (please give it a unique file name like dept_last name_keywords from title)
- Names and emails of your co-investigators (note that luncheon invitations will be mailed to your co-investigators with this information).
- Name and email of your faculty mentor
- Your 30-second video, explaining your research, in an .MP4 file format that is <500 MB
- Once your poster has been successfully uploaded and confirmed, you may not re-submit! We will print your poster once it has been confirmed. Due to the cost of printing, there will be no opportunity for changes, so make sure it is your final draft!
- You should receive an automatic confirmation email within 30 minutes of submission. If you do not receive an automatic email from us within that time, contact the Dean's Office at (801) 422-2083, option 2 or fhss@byu.edu. If you are experiencing technical difficulties with your submission, please email fhss-web@byu.edu.
