Oh No! I've Accidentally Elected a Republican! The Effects of Nonpartisan Local Elections on City Council Partisan Composition
Abstract
Does the presence of party labels in local elections impact local partisan representation? We use data from over 15,300 U.S. city governments that includes election type and official/resident partisanship. We find that non-partisan elections allow minority party candidates to “sneak” into office in cities where their party is unpopular.
