Annual Mentored Learning Conference

The College of Family, Home and Social Sciences invites undergraduate and graduate students to participate in the annual Mentored Student Research Conference sponsored by the Mary Lou Fulton Chair. The conference is a full day event designed to showcase mentored student learning. It is an opportunity for students to present and explain their research to the public. This year’s conference is April 3, 2008.

Students from all departments in the college are encouraged to participate by preparing a poster illustrating the hypothesis, process and results of their research. Participating students are also invited to attend the annual conference lunch, where they have the opportunity to network with fellow students, faculty and other guests.

Registration: Students wishing to participate in the conference need to fill out the online registration form.
Registration serves several purposes.
The abstract entered on the registration form is used in the judging process.

It identifies the names, departments and poster titles of all participants. This information will be used to produce a conference program.

It identifies the number of students who will participate so we may prepare for the luncheon.

It provides current contact information. (Please update your “Route Y” account with your current email before you fill out the registration form.)
Poster Guidelines:
Poster size 48” wide by 36” high

Please do not use specialized fonts, use fonts that can be found on any computer. If students need help designing their poster, they may contact the FHSS media team at fhsscomputing@byu.edu.

Do not use images from Google image search.  These are of inadequate quality, even if they are a large size.  The images need to be 300 dpi (dots-per-inch) or higher quality.  Anything you use from the internet will not be sufficient (the internet displays 72 dpi) and there will be blurriness and distortion upon printing. If you need to find images, search for Royalty Free Images, such as iStockPhoto.com. iStockPhoto.com has a large selection and most images are only a few dollars each.  Remember to only purchase images that are 300 dpi or higher.  There are some images available at BYU Photo.  Most of these images are from the BYU campus.

Each poster must have the student name(s), the faculty mentor's name, the department name and the BYU seal on the top of the poster. The title of the poster should match the title entered on the registration form. Please go to identity.byu.edu to download the appropriate BYU logo.

Posters must be submitted in PDF format.
Converting to PDF
  1. Some programs will let you save your poster as a PDF directly.  Choose "File" and then "Save As..."  There should be an option to choose what format the document is being saved in.  Find this menu and choose "PDF" or "Portable Document Format."
  2. If the program you are using will not let you save your file as a PDF, you will need to "print" it as one.  Choose "File and then "Print..."  There should be an option to choose which printer you will be using.  Find this menu and choose "AdobePDFWriter" or "CutePDFWriter" or whichever PDF writer your computer has.  Click "Print" and it will ask you to name your file.  Name it and it will save the file as a PDF on your computer.
Deadline:
All posters must be uploaded by March 20, 2008.
Printing the Poster
The college will print all submitted posters. Once the students' posters have been printed, they will receive an email confirmation number. This number identifies the poster. Do not lose the number; students will need the number to retrieve their poster for display on April 3. (If you do not receive a confirmation number then something has gone wrong and you must contact the media team at fhsscomputing@byu.edu.)
Judging
A committee comprised of representatives from the college will select a first, second and third place winner from each department. The criteria for evaluating the posters are as follows:
Quality of Research
Overall Poster Clarity
Visual Appeal
Displaying the Poster
The posters will be organized by number and transported by the Dean's Office staff to the Ballroom in the Wilkinson Student Center. Students will need to come to the Ballroom on April 3, between 7:30 am and 8:30 am to hang up their posters. Posters will be displayed according to department. Help will be available to attach the hardware and hang the posters.
